12 publishers, 24 bloggers and several people across the world are joining hands to get thousands of kids reading over 6 weeks this Summer. This Readathon, for the youngest and emerging readers, is powered by MeMeTales Reader app and website. Every week, kids get access to a free book they can read and have fun with. Parents enjoy a new activity pack with a host of relevant activities, carefully prepared by educators and publishers every single week.

A fascinating article on how one teacher uses technology in the classroom. They even spend some time covering how he uses an iPad, feedback systems, peer instruction and inquiry-based learning.

As soon as kids walk in, Musallam sends out a text blast through Remind101, asking them a challenge question that’s related to the day’s lesson. “First person to tell me the units on K for a second order reaction gets chocolate,” he types and sends off. His students know he does this regularly, so they’re constantly anticipating the question during the day, in and out of class.

“Sure, that’s kind of cute,” he says, admitting that it can be seen as gimmicky. “But more importantly, in my mind that’s saying, ‘You’re carrying around something that I can contact you with.’ It’s a fun ways to stay motivated in our day, which can be pretty dry sometimes. It’s a chance to think about what we’re learning outside the context of state testing.”

For our next report studying the changing role of public libraries in the digital age, we’re supplementing our usual nationally representative phone surveys with online surveys to draw out the deeper, richer stories behind the data.
One-fifth of American adults (21%) report that they have read an e-book in the past year. The rise of e-books in American culture is part of a larger story about a shift from printed to digital material. We’ve got it all in our new report out today.

You’ll notice that the new report is living in a new space - as part of our multi-year study of the changing role of public libraries in the digital age, we felt it was important to give this work a room of its own. Please let us know what you think!

After months of delay, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potterfantasy series is available in e-book editions for the first time. But if you go to Amazon or Barnes & Noble, you’ll see something you’ve never seen before — a landing page with links that send you away to buy the book elsewhere.

Harry Potter is the only publishing brand big enough (so far) to break all the rules about how e-bookstores work. Instead of being sold through the retailers and their devices, or even through the publishers, all sales are made through a site owned and branded by the author. Rowling and Pottermore convinced retailers to digitally support the books with device syncing, bookmarks, and all the trappings that usually are only provided for books sold through the retailers’ own sites.

“This is the first time Amazon and B&N have driven customers off their platform to another site, and then given the ability to push that content back to their device,” Pottermore CEO Charlie Redmayne told The Bookseller.
